Road safety education will be included in the education plans starting from the 2022/23 school year.

The DGT has succeeded in getting road safety training included in educational plans, and primary and secondary school pupils will receive road safety education classes.

For a long time, the DGT has sought to have road safety education added as a subject in educational plans. This year this change has been authorised for the school curriculum, and pupils starting the 2022/23 school year will take this subject. Until now, road safety education was offered across the curriculum and through special days, which involved the participation of Local Police officers.

In the DGT’s view, this was insufficient to build a solid foundation in future drivers so that breaking traffic rules does not prove difficult to avoid. With the Royal Decree amending the Organic Law on Education, road safety education becomes a subject in its own right, and will help pupils understand the reality of traffic, which they will join once they reach adulthood.

The introduction of the subject, in the words of Pere Navarro, Director General of the DGT, “will allow children to develop active, autonomous and healthy mobility habits“. In addition, it will help establish safe behaviour on the road, including as pedestrians or users of bicycles or e-scooters.

The director of the institution has not forgotten to thank the officers who have offered primary and secondary pupils these voluntary training sessions over all these years. The training will now be more complete and continuous, with a class that will provide information on traffic rules and the keys to driving safely from the moment of training.

Following the approval of the Royal Decree introducing the subject, the ones who must act are the autonomous communities and the education communities of each of them, which will be responsible for managing this subject. The next school year, 2022/23, will be the first in which it is taught, so more information on the content to be taught from primary to secondary school is expected soon.
