According to statistical data from the consultancy MSI, average emissions from vehicles sold in Spain in 2012 have fallen by 4.5% compared with 2011. The values recorded last year averaged 128 g/km.

This is largely due to the crisis. With rising fuel prices, the cars being sold are smaller. But also more efficient, since they consume as little as possible and, consequently, are the ones that emit least. Thanks to technological improvements in consumption and emissions for new four-, three- and two-cylinder engines, emissions are reduced while fuel consumption also drops.

In 2012, 53% of the cars sold in our country emitted fewer than 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre driven, totalling 370,186 units, 6.6% more than the previous year.

All of this is happening just as the EU had set the requirement that all vehicles sold in Europe from 2015 onwards must meet less than 130 g/km. Spain has met the new standard ahead of schedule, though not necessarily out of a willingness to comply.
