Farewell to the Mercedes-AMG S 65 with a special commemorative edition
Mercedes-Benz bids farewell to the six-litre twin-turbo V12 engine of its S-Class with a special edition known as the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition
There are big cars and great cars, and the Mercedes-AMG S 65 combines both definitions. That is why saying goodbye to a flagship like this can only be done by rolling out one last batch of commemorative vehicles.
In fact, just 130 units of the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition will be delivered to a very exclusive clientele. And it is exclusive not only because of the cost of this vehicle, since the price of the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition, although yet to be announced, is certain to exceed the 290,000 euros of the base version of the model, but because only 130 cars will be produced and delivered worldwide.
For this reason, the Geneva show, the quintessential event for the automotive sector, seems the ideal place to present the exhibition unit that says goodbye to the mighty twin-turbo V12 engine of the Mercedes-AMG S 65.
Goodbye to the V12 in the Mercedes-AMG S 65
The reason for this model’s discontinuation is none other than the removal of the massive six-litre engine, which has 12 cylinders in a V configuration and is supported by two turbos, that the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition will fit for the last time, at least as a Mercedes-Benz.
It seems that these engines, besides being supplied to other manufacturers, as in the case of engine supply to craftsmen such as Pagani, will be reserved for the Maybach, the only vehicles directly owned by Daimler that Mercedes-Benz will keep.
Suffocating anti-pollution measures are closing in on the most powerful engines which, at the same time, are less concerned with fuel consumption. That is why mechanical hearts such as the six-litre twin-turbo V12, whose homologated consumption is put at 14.2 litres per 100 km on average in the mixed cycle, are being sidelined, or at least, pushed almost to the edge of the law, models as explosive as this luxury saloon.
A special finish for the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition
This car needs little extra fuss to be more impressive. From its original factory form to the presence conferred by the AMG finish, its presence is now even more distinctive thanks to additions such as the eye-catching 20-inch wheels in a gold colour that contrasts with the black bodywork.
As it could not be otherwise, the interior of the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition will offer unique elements such as commemorative plates and badges, nappa leather upholstery, or the inclusion of carbon-fibre parts that help reduce the weight of this “tank”.
Because of this, the twin-turbo V12 could be nothing other than extraordinarily powerful. With its 630 CV, the enormous torque that launches this car like a surface-to-surface missile is set at no less than 1,000 Nm between 2,300 and 4,300 rpm. With this performance, the top speed with the AMG pack reaches 300 km/h.
Farewell in Switzerland
It seems that the Geneva Motor Show, which opens its doors in a few hours, will be the farewell event for several models from the star brand. Alongside this Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition, the definitive commemorative version of the Mercedes-Benz SLK SLC Final Edition will also be on display, a variant that also puts the finishing touch on a classic sports car bowing out due to poor sales.
