First deliveries of the Firefly EV in China

This new city compact under the Firefly brand, with a cheerful and youthful design, will also reach some European countries this autumn.

The Chinese manufacturer NIO has just announced that deliveries of its new compact electric city car under the Firefly sub-brand have already begun in its home market. The launch of the Firefly EV took place simultaneously in several cities across the country and was attended by key figures from the company.

William Li, founder and Chief Executive Officer of NIO, took part in the ceremony handing over the first units of this new model in Guangzhou, while Daniel Jin, President of Firefly, was present at a parallel event in Hangzhou. It is worth noting in this regard that the Firefly mobile app, just like that of NIO, does not only allow remote control of vehicle functions as many other manufacturers’ apps do, but also serves as a channel for sharing news and user experiences with the community.

The official debut of the Firefly EV took place on 19 April, a few days before the Shanghai Motor Show began, with sales starting shortly afterwards. In China, the base price of this compact city car is 119,800 yuan, which at the current exchange rate comes to around 14,500 euros.

However, the manufacturer plans to lower this price even further by selling the vehicle without the battery and leasing it separately. We should remember that Firefly incorporates NIO’s signature battery swap system alongside conventional charging, so on a model like this it makes much more sense to lease the battery.

The affordable brand of NIO in Europe will not be so affordable

With the Firefly sub-brand, NIO seeks to offer more affordable models while keeping the image of its main brand associated with vehicles of a more premium character. The company’s strategy with its Firefly sub-brand includes an ambitious international expansion, which will see it sell the Firefly EV in 16 new markets this same year, including several European countries.

However, as might be expected, prices in Europe for this city compact will be noticeably higher. In Norway, for example, the Firefly EV will be available from 279,900 kroner, which at the current exchange rate comes to around 23,500 euros. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands the price is even higher and starts at 29,900 euros. NIO plans to begin accepting orders in these two European countries from the third quarter of 2025, with deliveries scheduled for autumn. The model is then expected to be available in the German market as well.

Additionally, NIO has confirmed that the right-hand-drive version, aimed at markets such as the United Kingdom and some Southeast Asian countries, will be ready in October of this same year, which will help consolidate the brand’s global presence.

With its compact design, innovative technology and the backing of NIO’s infrastructure, Firefly has the potential to attract a good number of European customers, although its acceptance on the continent remains to be seen given its price, which is not as attractive as in the Chinese market.
