First order for Irizar's ie tram electric bus from outside Europe
The Va-y-Ven transport system in the Mexican city of Mérida will soon have a zero-emission bus line that will serve more than half a million passengers a week
The shift to electric mobility that urban public transport in many European cities is undergoing has created a huge business opportunity, which the Spanish manufacturer Irizar has known how to seize. The company’s orders keep coming in, and its electric buses can already be seen running in numerous Spanish cities, such as Madrid, Pamplona, Mallorca and Zaragoza, as well as in several other cities across the rest of Europe.
Irizar’s electric buses, however, are not of interest only within the borders of the old continent. The Spanish manufacturer has just announced the upcoming delivery of 32 units of its Zero Emissions buses to the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico. The route on which these buses will operate will provide transport to more than half a million people each week, according to the company.

The Mexican authorities have opted for Irizar’s ie tram model in its 12-metre configuration to carry out this task. Each of these buses can carry up to 80 passengers, of whom 33 can sit and the rest stand. These buses also have an area reserved for people travelling in wheelchairs and a ramp to allow them access.
Their versatility and functionality may be the secret of their success
As far as charging is concerned, the Irizar ie tram offers the option of using an inverted pantograph to supply power while in operation, and it is also possible to charge its batteries through a charging point installed in the transport company’s depots.
The route on which the Irizar ie trams will run is part of the Va-y-Ven transport system in the Mexican city of Mérida, connecting the Tren Maya station with Umán, Kanasín, the UADY engineering school and Parque Plancha. The Mexican company Mobility Ado will be the operator responsible for managing this public transport line using these 100% electric Irizar buses.

Following the announcement of this news, Iñigo Etxeberria, General Manager of Irizar e-mobility, expressed his satisfaction at how important a project like this is for the company, as it will allow it to deploy its electromobility solutions outside the European market for the first time.
