Forget about snow chains thanks to the smart tyre from Hyundai and Kia
Hyundai and Kia present a unique system that improves safety in winter conditions: a smart tyre that, with the press of a single button, improves grip on snowy or icy surfaces

The revolution in road safety during winter is about to arrive thanks to Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation. The two brands have joined forces in an unprecedented project to present an innovative tyre technology that integrates snow chains. This system, based on a shape memory alloy, deploys at the touch of a button, without even having to get out of the car or go through the whole tedious process.
The patented technology, designed for repeated use, aims to simplify and increase the comfort of winter road journeys, providing drivers with an effective and quick solution. This advance not only saves time by eliminating the hassle of snow chains, but also increases safety, especially during heavy and sudden snowfalls.
A new module system
The system uses shape memory alloy modules integrated into the wheel and tyre. These modules, strategically arranged in radial grooves resembling the shape of a pizza, are activated by an electrical signal. Unlike cumbersome conventional chains, this technology deploys with just the touch of a button, transforming the grooves into effective snow chains.
Joon Mo Park, head of the advanced chassis development team, expressed the commitment of Hyundai and Kia to introducing advanced technologies into practical solutions. “We are focused on turning these innovations into real benefits for our customers, improving the safety and comfort of our vehicles,” he said.

Smart operation
The technology takes advantage of the unique ability of the shape memory alloy to return to its original state when an electric current is applied. How? Quite simply: during normal driving, the alloy is compressed into the shape of the letter “L“, without touching the road surface. When the function is activated, the electric current transforms the alloy into a “J” shape, pushing the modules out of the tyre to improve grip, stability and safety on snowy roads. If it’s still not clear, it’s best to watch the explanatory video.

In addition, this innovation gives drivers a clear signal about tyre wear. If the tyre surface reaches the height of the module due to severe wear, drivers can easily identify the degradation and schedule a tyre replacement, avoiding unpleasant surprises on the road.
From here to mass production
The tyre technology with integrated snow chain is currently pending patent in South Korea and the United States. Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation have announced plans to consider mass production after a rigorous technological development process, durability and performance testing, as well as thorough reviews of current regulations.
