GAC will return to Detroit with the GS4 and two prototypes

GAC Motor has announced that it will attend the Detroit Auto Show for the second consecutive year. The Cantonese carmaker will showcase three vehicles at the Cobo Center: the new compact GS4 SUV and the GA6 GT and Witstar prototypes. GAC has only released a sketch of the first, which will be unveiled to the world for the first time at the American event.
The published image reflects a modern design, not particularly daring yet not flashy either, with a front end featuring a chrome grille and prominent side air intakes in the bumper. The combination of two tones for the bodywork, along with the tension lines on the bonnet and sides, or the large-sized wheels, make it somewhat more eye-catching.
The GS4 can be equipped with two turbocharged 1.3 and 1.5-litre engines, although GAC Motor has not yet disclosed its technical specifications. The Cantonese brand also notes that it will feature an interior that places emphasis on the comfort of its occupants and on technology.
The Trumpchi GA6 launched on the Chinese market in December following its presentation at the Canton Motor Show.
Few details have also been revealed about the GA6 GT and Witstar prototypes. GAC Motor has only indicated that they will have a hybrid powertrain with extended range, similar to the one it unveiled in 2013 with the E-jet Concept, and that the Witstar will include autonomous driving technology, as well as a maximum range greater than 600 kilometres and fuel consumption below 2 l/100 km.
GAC Motor’s goal in returning to the Cobo Center is the same as last year’s. According to its general manager, Wu Song, the Chinese manufacturer wants to gain visibility abroad by demonstrating its progress and proving that its products are increasingly capable of competing in new international markets.
In addition, it will use the Detroit Show to seek more partners whose support will help it continue researching alternative energies and production strategies. Last year, GAC arrived in the city having signed an agreement with Chrysler and Fiat to manufacture Jeep in China.
Both the 4WD Hybrid and the GS5 BEV are based on the Alfa Romeo 166 platform.
In 2013, GAC Motor’s presence at this show drew the attention of media and attendees more out of curiosity (it was the only Chinese manufacturer at the show) than from genuine interest in its new models. The E-jet Concept was accompanied by two prototypes from its Trumpchi brand: the 4WD Hybrid saloon and the 100% electric GS5 BEV SUV.
