General Motors continues with recalls of another 8.5 million cars in July

The problem with the ignition key in several General Motors models built from 1994 through this year continues to cause trouble for the brand and to trigger recalls of millions of units, which is costing the company many millions of dollars

The problem of the faulty ignition in General Motors cars is going to cost the company dearly. We have already mentioned on several occasions that during June many vehicles of the brand were affected by this recall, but the month closed with another six requests to check the operation of several more models.

In the United States alone, 7.6 million vehicles will have to go through authorised dealerships in order to inspect the condition of the ignition key that has caused so many problems for the company. It is not a minor issue: these manufacturing defects have led to seven serious accidents, with eight injured and three dead.

Worldwide, the number of cars recalled for inspection rises to 8.5 million units. The problem seems to have been resolved in more recent models, and it is cars built from 1994 until early this year that could suffer from these problems. It is a defect in the ignition that causes the engine to shut off and, as a consequence, the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which can lead to an accident.

General Motors has responded by stating that everything is under control and that work is being done to minimise the damage caused by this design fault. In total, about 25 million vehicles have been inspected so far, at a cost of 700 million dollars across the 54 safety campaigns carried out to date, although a further 1.2 billion dollars is expected for the second half of the year.

A disaster for the company’s accounts, which it is rushing to fix and which could lead to new quality control systems to ensure these problems do not happen again in the future. Something that car users, both of GM and of other brands, will greatly appreciate.
