Honda shows the Civic Type R Prototype at the Paris Motor Show, the continuation of a saga

Honda presented the Civic Type R Prototype at the Paris Motor Show. In this way, the Japanese brand gives continuity to the Type R saga, although the final version of this high-performance model will not be unveiled and put on sale until next year.

We had already seen the new lines of the five-door Honda Civic that will go on sale next year, and now it is the turn of the high-performance version that many were waiting for. The aggressive design of the new Honda Civic Type R Prototype, both sporty and striking, shows that this is a car that has nothing to do with the production model. It shares the same platform and body as the five-door variant, but it is much wider at the front and rear wheel arches. In addition, the bodywork features a polished aluminium-effect finish that is highly reflective, exclusive to the prototype shown at the Show.

At the front, the bumper stands out for its large air intakes, which are also present on two levels on the bonnet. At the bottom, a red line highlights the sporty style, which is present on the side skirts and on the lower part of the rear diffuser. At the rear, the large rear spoiler and the three exhaust pipes housed in the diffuser’s central section catch the eye. The central one has a smaller diameter and stands out for its bright metallic red colour.

The exterior is completed by 20″ wheels finished in Piano-Black with red accents and high-performance tyres. The iconic red H is also present, a significant detail showing that this is a high-performance vehicle from Honda. The Japanese brand has revealed few other details about this prototype. It is also unknown what engine or final power output it will have, although it may use as a base the 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC unit with more power than the current one.

It is only a prototype with fairly defined lines, although next year the final production version will be presented definitively and will be manufactured at the Honda plant in Swindon (United Kingdom), which is the global production hub for the five-door model, and it is scheduled to launch in Europe during the second half of 2017.

The idea of Honda is for the Civic Type R to be exported to global markets, including the United States, which will be the first time a Type R model bearing the Honda badge is officially sold in North America.
