How is the crash test of the Toyota CH-R?

The Toyota CH-R underwent the necessary crash test two years ago to verify its safety. If you want to see what its results were, keep reading.

The Toyota CH-R was the alternative the Japanese brand launched on the market for those who wanted a hybrid but whose eyes were not drawn to the almost extraterrestrial image of the Toyota Prius. Moreover, they found the right formula: the SUV segment was selling like hot cakes and hybrids were gaining more and more popularity, so combining the two ingredients was a recipe for guaranteed success. Our colleagues at Highmotor have already carried out a road test of the Toyota CH-R, so you can read their impressions.

The Toyota was not wrong, as the Toyota CH-R has been a real sales success, registering around 9,000 units so far this year. This has earned it the title of second best-selling hybrid car in Spain, ahead of its bigger sibling, the Toyota RAV-4, and behind the smaller one, the Toyota Corolla. Furthermore, the electric version of the Toyota CH-R was unveiled in China, so we don’t know whether it will reach the European market.

Therefore, it seems that the Toyota CH-R is an ideal purchase if you need a family car, with an ECO label, low consumption and a distinctive design. However, one benchmark we tend not to consider is the safety score the car we like has achieved in the relevant crash tests. This is something that should carry great weight, since the lives of those travelling in the car depend on it in the event of a collision.

Toyota CH-RWhat crash tests has the Toyota CH-R had to pass?

The organisation responsible for assessing the levels of protection a vehicle offers its occupants is called Euro NCAP. During the tests, they carry out various checks focused on different areas:

Adult occupant protection:

Within this area, five impacts are performed to determine their consequences for the occupants: frontal impact, whiplash, side impact against a vehicle, side impact against a pole, and knee protection. The maximum score in these tests can reach 36 points.

Driver assistance systems

This section analyses how the seat belt reminders (driver, front passenger and rear seats), stability control and speed limiter work, in case the car is fitted with one.

Pedestrian protection

During this test, Euro NCAP reproduces two pedestrian impacts at a speed of 40 km/h, one with a child and another with an adult. Obviously, the people used are not made of flesh and bone, but are dummies or mannequins.

Child occupant protection

In both the frontal impact test and the side impact test, Euro NCAP places two dummies in the rear seats. One simulates a one-year-old child and the other a three-year-old. The maximum score is 25 points per child, that is, 50 in total.

After passing these tests, what was the Toyota CH-R’s score?

In its crash tests, the Toyota CH-R proved to be a true example when it comes to safety. The Japanese brand’s hybrid SUV achieved the maximum rating, that is, five Euro NCAP stars. The result was 95% overall protection for adult occupants, 77% for children, 76% for pedestrian protection and 78% for safety systems.

Therefore, we clear up any doubts about whether a bestseller like the Toyota CH-R is a safe car. The answer is a resounding yes, so if you are thinking of buying one and are concerned about the active and passive safety it may offer, we can confirm you can rest easy.
