How much does it cost to replace a car battery?

Until fairly recently, a car battery could be replaced at home, but nowadays it is necessary to go to a specialised workshop to have it done.

Replacing Car Battery

The car battery is the component that supplies the electricity that powers the vehicle, so it is very important to keep it in good condition. It must have an adequate charge level and be able to supply the electricity needed to run the car’s electrical components normally. However, the battery wears out and its charge level drops too. That is when the battery needs replacing, and the question arises: how much does it cost to replace a car battery?

The price of a battery varies greatly depending on the type of battery the car uses. There is a wide variety of battery types, offering different voltages and charging characteristics. Depending on these features, a battery may have more or less capacity, and that also affects the price.

Characteristics of car batteries

Car batteries can have different characteristics, which can change the functions they offer and, consequently, the price. These are the characteristics of the batteries found on the market.

  • Ampere-hours (Ah): Ampere-hours determine the charge capacity of a battery. The more ampere-hours a battery has, the longer it takes to discharge if the lights or any other electrical element of the car have been left on.
  • Cold cranking amps (A): Amps determine the amount of energy the battery can deliver in cold conditions. The more amps it has, the easier it is to start the car. A standard battery offers 440A, but there is a wider range of amperage among the batteries on the market.
  • Engine compartment dimensions: Each car model has a particular size, which can change the space available for the battery. There are different sizes for different car models, so you must choose a battery that fits the available space under the bonnet perfectly.
  • Location of the positive and negative terminals: Some batteries have the positive terminal on the right or on the left. It is important to know how the positive and negative terminals are positioned in the car, so that the battery is always fitted in the same position. Polarity must never be reversed, as this can cause serious damage to the car’s electrical system.
  • Stop & Start system: Cars equipped with this feature save fuel and are very efficient, but they need a battery that suits this function. Before buying a battery, check whether it is compatible with this system.
  • Voltage: In this case the picture is clearer. All car batteries operate at 12 volts, so they all share the same characteristics in this respect.

With all this in mind, you can find car batteries at different prices, depending on how these figures vary. There are different brands, which is another variable that leads to different battery prices.

Car battery prices and installation

A battery rated 440Ah and 330A, a fairly common type that can suit several small or compact models, can cost between 70 and 80 euros. The larger the battery, with more capacity and amperage, the more expensive it will be, so you should consider what you actually need.

As for installation, cars older than 15 years had fairly easy access to the battery, and it was relatively simple to replace it when necessary, and the replacement could be done at home. Today, due to the presence of more electronic components, a specialised workshop is needed.

The mechanic can replace the battery and prevent the onboard computer systems from losing stored data due to a loss of power. This also has a cost, which can be around 25-30 euros, depending on how complex the process is. Some workshops offer the replacement for free if you buy the battery there, while others charge more for the change.

It is important to compare the different offers available at local workshops and choose the most cost-effective one. There is no standard rate, and you may find a battery-plus-installation package that works out very economical. At Highmotor we advise, if the car is less than ten years old, to have a workshop carry out the replacement, in order to avoid data loss and any other serious headaches.
