How to choose the best GPS

We all already know the devices GPS that guide us while we drive: they have been on the market for several years and work very well if we have a good-quality one. The team at PorDescubrir has drawn up a short guide with some practical tips for choosing a device for our car with a certain amount of judgement.

New devices come with internet connectivity, with the advantages this brings: they not only give us information on the correct route to take, but also provide useful information about the areas we visit: shops, roadworks, petrol stations, whether the traffic is heavy at that particular moment, and many other notable features.

So when choosing a GPS, it would be advisable to pay attention to certain aspects:

  • Reception and coverage. The less time the device takes to receive the satellite signal, and the more satellites it detects, the better the coverage will be.
  • Screen. It should be large enough that the driver does not have to strain their eyes or take their gaze away from the road. Let us remember that the driver’s first job is to drive. It should also have sufficient brightness and avoid glare. If it is touch-sensitive and has a “night mode”, it will make searching easier.
  • Secure mounting. It should have a mounting system close to the driver in a visible position, which at the same time provides a sound grip that prevents the device from coming loose.
  • Battery. The GPS you choose should have a battery that lasts an average of four hours. For longer journeys it is essential to keep the charger in the car.
  • Updates. Having internet connectivity so the GPS can download updates as they are released is one of the most convenient advantages for the driver, since otherwise, if you forget to update the device, the information it gives you may no longer be valid.
