Hyundai and Kia are developing a 10-speed gearbox

The number of gears or speeds that can be fitted inside a transmission casing seems to be unlimited, given that we already have seven- and eight-speed gearboxes and a nine-speed one in development by ZF.

The development of the 10-speed gearbox has been announced by the group’s chairman Hyundai in person. This gearbox will be automatic and will see intensive use in the luxury models of both brands.

The new transmission is expected to reach the market in 2014. The reason why modern transmissions have more and more gears should be sought in fuel economy benefits. More gears mean tighter consumption figures, and emissions likewise.
