Hyundai Kona Electric: the electric crossover goes on sale from €35,100

The Hyundai Kona Electric hits the market with revolutionary range: 450 km according to the WLTP cycle.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is already on sale from €38,500 (price before applying the brand’s discounts). The 100% electric crossover from the South Korean manufacturer stands out for its revolutionary range exceeding 450 km (according to the new WLTP cycle) in its most performance-oriented version.

The mechanics of the Hyundai Kona Electric: up to 204 CV of power

The Hyundai Kona Electric features a permanent magnet motor with two performance versions: 136 CV or 204 CV. The most performance-oriented variant of the crossover delivers 395 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds (a figure it shares with the 136 CV version). Its top speed is limited to 167 km/h.

The power of this motor is outstanding, and even more so the immediacy with which it delivers acceleration. There is always torque, there is always power available under the accelerator pedal, which works almost like an on-off switch. In terms of feel, the power delivery is like having a very large turbo always waiting to send all the force of the motor’s 204 CV. That said, it is a turbo with electronic control: forceful, but progressive.

The automatic transmission of the Hyundai Kona Electric is quite unusual: it is managed through buttons, in a completely intuitive and electronic way.

Batteries of up to 64 kWh and a range close to 500 km

The standard Hyundai Kona Electric features a 39.2 kWh battery that offers a range of 312 km, according to the WLTP cycle. The higher-performance version, meanwhile, uses a 64 kWh battery that provides a range of 482 km, according to the WLTP cycle. The South Korean manufacturer claims that in urban driving the car can reach 600 km of range in its most performance-oriented variant (64 kWh battery).

The charging time using a standard 16 A plug (230 volts or 3.68 kW) is 9 hours and 35 minutes to reach a full charge. If, on the other hand, we use a 100 kW fast charger, the Hyundai Kona Electric can recharge its battery to 80% in just 54 minutes.

Already on sale from €38,500, but with discounts of more than €3,000

The Hyundai KONA Electric is already on sale from €38,500, although with the various purchase incentives offered by the Korean manufacturer in Spain (in-house financing, a discount for trading in a used vehicle, even if it is not a Hyundai, etc.) the starting price is €35,100. That said, it is worth taking it with a grain of salt, because the first three hundred units destined for the Spanish market have already been allocated, and a delay of between four and five months for delivery is estimated, simply due to the success the car is having, not only in its country of origin but also in Northern Europe.
