Just a few days ago we were discussing that Hyundai was preparing a new fuel cell model powered by hydrogen. There were doubts about its name, and it was even said that it would be a new version of the ix35, but finally the Korean brand has announced the name this new model will receive. And its features, which are also interesting. The Hyundai Nexo will be ready to reach the international market in early 2018 and, as expected, technology is very much present in the model.

One of the things the Korean brand wanted to offer was an advance in autonomous driving, equipping the Hyundai Nexo with a series of technologies that will not only help the driver improve the driving experience, but also represent a step forward towards the autonomous driving everyone wants. Among the technologies present is the blind spot sensor, which is always very useful when driving and increases the safety of the vehicle.

Technology to improve safety

The Hyundai Nexo is the second generation of fuel cell cars. The Lane Following Assist (LFA) system and the Highway Driving Assist (HDA) assistant are also useful for driving with peace of mind. The first allows the car to stay in its lane at speeds between 0 and 145 km/h, and when used together with the second, it uses sensors and map data to adjust the route, scanning the terrain and improving driving conditions.

An automatic parking system allows the driver to get out of the car and let the vehicle park itself in a bay. The reliability of these systems means the car can handle this manoeuvre on its own. But what we all wanted to know is the range of the Hyundai Nexo, which, according to the company, will have a range of 596 kilometres, which is 168 kilometres more than its predecessor.

The power and acceleration have also been increased to improve its performance. In addition, work has been done to verify that it can operate at extreme temperatures, and it has been certified that it can start in just 30 seconds even at 29º below zero. The fuel cell system warms up faster to achieve greater performance. At the other extreme, it can operate well at temperatures of up to 49º.

There are several improvements in air supply, performance at high altitudes and refuelling times, along with overall efficiency and fuel savings, so the Hyundai Nexo appears to be a good option in the fuel cell car market.
