On the occasion of the 17th edition of the World Car Awards 2022 held at the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai has managed to win no fewer than three awards with its Hyundai IONIQ 5, which, in addition to being elected World Car of the Year 2022, has also been awarded the Best Design prize and the Best Electric Car of the Year prize by a jury of 102 specialist journalists.

Jaehoon Chang, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, expressed the great honour for the company of having received these prestigious awards, which recognise the talent and hard work of all its employees, representing a “crucial achievement” for all of them.

Since its launch last year in 2021, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has stood out as a revolutionary EV thanks to its innovative technologies in the E-GMP platform, its strong performance and its disruptive approach to design and space, while also supporting the acceleration of electrification in the automotive industry.

Three out of three wins

From an initial list of 28 models, the jury from 33 different countries selected three finalists, among which was our protagonist, the Kia EV6, which shares its platform with the IONIQ 5, and the Mustang Mach-E, three models that occupy the most technological division of their brands.

On the other hand, for the World Car Design of the Year, six global design experts were in charge of evaluating the design of the participants, once again crowning the Hyundai IONIQ 5 as the winner.

A benchmark in design too

As we have already said, the IONIQ 5 has also been chosen as World Electric Vehicle of the Year, ahead of major rivals such as the Audi e-tron GT –winner of the 2022 World Performance Car– and the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai’s Global Design Center, said, “With the IONIQ 5, we set out to create a new mobility experience, a game changer”, an idea born from the passion and efforts of the designers and engineers who showed what they are capable of with this popular electrified SUV.
