Hyundai will improve the range of its cars by 60% with solar panels
Group Hyundai will improve the range and efficiency of its cars through the incorporation of new solar panel technology.
The group Hyundai (Kia and Hyundai) has announced a project to introduce innovative solar charging technology in some of its vehicles. The solar panels will be incorporated into the roof or the bonnet to provide electrical energy to combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, which will increase their efficiency and range. The first generation of this technology will reach the market in 2019.
Range increased by up to 60% thanks to solar panels
The solar panels of the Hyuidai group will offer a power of 100 W, which will make it possible to produce 100 Wh of energy in ideal conditions: midday in summer and a radiation intensity of 1,000 W/m2. Under these conditions, the electrified cars of Hyundai or Kia will be able to recharge between 30% and 60% of the battery in a single day, as well as emitting less CO2 into the atmosphere.

Hyundai Motor Group is developing three types of solar charging systems: the first system will be for hybrid vehicles; the second, a translucent solar roof for combustion vehicles; the third will involve the introduction of a lightweight solar roof for battery electric vehicles.
Solar roof for hybrid cars: up to 60% more range
The first generation of this technology will be applied to hybrid models. It will consist of a structure of silicon solar panels integrated into the car’s standard roof. This system could recharge, in the best case, between 30% and 60% of the battery, provided that weather conditions and other environmental factors allow it.

Solar roof for combustion cars: lower CO2 emissions
The second-generation semi-transparent solar roof system will be applied to internal combustion vehicles. This technology will form a glass panoramic roof, allowing light to pass into the cabin while the battery is recharged. In addition, this system will help to reduce CO2 emissions from these cars.

Solar roof for 100% electric cars: more range
The solar panel system of the Hyundai group that will be applied in 100% electric vehicles is currently in the testing phase. It is designed to be integrated into the bonnet or roof of the car, with the aim of improving its electric range.
