IndyCar: four cars will be penalised at Sonoma with the loss of 10 grid positions

Several IndyCar drivers will start the Sonoma race with 10 grid positions lost due to unauthorised engine changes or other changes that exceed the annual engine allocation set by the regulations.

The IndyCar series is preparing for the Californian circuit of Sonoma, the next round of its current season, which will be marked by the authority of the stewards even before it begins; four cars have received penalties and will lose 10 positions on the starting grid.

The penalties have been handed out for unauthorised engine changes or changes that exceed those permitted by IndyCar, and begin with Takuma Sato, who will be using the sixth engine of the season at Sonoma. Sebastian Saavedra will be penalised for an unauthorised engine change at Indianapolis; Justin Wilson, who changed his engine this week, and Simona de Silvestro, who is already on her seventh engine of the year.

Let us recall that IndyCar’s rules establish that each entrant will have five new engines available during the season. Should it require the use of more engines, it will incur a penalty for each engine changed from the fifth onwards, resulting in the loss of starting positions.
