Infiniti will use Fly-by-Wire steering technology in the steering of its models
Nissan has developed a computer-controlled steering system that will do away with mechanical linkages, delivering benefits such as significant fuel savings.

Earlier this week, Nissan announced that it plans to equip upcoming models from its subsidiary Infiniti with a system capable of electronically controlling steering by computer to replace the mechanical linkage. The Japanese carmaker has named this technology “Fly-by-Wire”, and the innovation will be applied on a large scale across its new cars.
In the near future we will see the first vehicles using this technology, according to what representatives of Nissan stated during a press conference. Through this new technology, the driver’s movements at the steering wheel are sent to an electronic engine control unit, which can tell a small electric motor how to move the tyres.
These future models will also benefit from a safety clutch designed to mechanically connect the steering wheel and the wheels in case of a problem with the system.
The advantages of this steering over the new electromechanical systems fitted to models such as the Porsche 911 or even other Nissan models is that the former will mean significant energy savings while keeping everything even more tightly controlled by the vehicle’s computers.
This is not the first time we have heard of this steering system, since last year Audi implemented it on its A2 Concept, but the difference between one brand and another is that Nissan will be the first to use it in production vehicles.
