Is the 0-100 really that important? Perhaps not so much
The declared figure for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint is a decisive number for many. Today we analyse whether this value really is as important and necessary as it seems.

Many are the supercars with jaw-dropping performance and we would never have imagined that a production car could boast certain figures. Nowadays, several models outperform many competition cars from years ago, and even some vehicles from less radical segments offer performance above that of many supercars from not so long ago. However, there comes a point where we wonder whether the 0-100 and top speed are such important elements.
These figures have long been a reference point when buying a supercar and it is something manufacturers put a great deal of effort into, aiming to improve and, at the same time, outdo their main rivals. But it is not only the brands that take it into account, the users themselves do too and it is an element we often turn to when comparing one vehicle with another.
This happens not only with supercars, but also with vehicles from lower segments, such as compacts. We can see this reflected, for example, in the Audi RS3. The hot hatchback from Audi offers impressive performance, and its 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder inline engine is capable of developing 400 CV. This figure matches that of a Ferrari 360 Modena, a supercar that featured a powerful naturally aspirated V8 and claimed a 0-100 time of 4.5 seconds, a figure the RS3 beats by five thousandths of a second.

It is true that technology has evolved since the start of the century, when the prancing horse was still on the production line at Ferrari, but we do not know what point that evolution will reach. On the other hand, electric vehicles are arriving on our market, providing instant torque delivery and producing mind-blowing acceleration, outperforming many combustion vehicles.
On the other hand, there are also vehicles capable of reaching 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds, such as the Lamborghini Aventador or the Bugatti Chiron. From a commercial standpoint, it may not be the best value to consider when choosing a vehicle, unless it is a supercar, since its purchase is driven by passion and the pursuit of sensations. Speaking practically, this figure supports a very important aspect of vehicles, safety.

There may be occasions when we need to accelerate very quickly or abruptly and in that situation it will benefit us that our engine can reach very high speeds in a very short time. Even so, it need not be decisive when buying a car more suitable than a supercar, although today we can put into practice the so-called launch control thanks to the reinforced mechanics incorporated in current vehicles.
In conclusion, we have before us a value that, over time, has been given considerable importance, yet several vehicles, without offering a scandalously high acceleration, have many other positive aspects overall. On the other hand, it is certainly important in the world of competition or when acquiring a high-end supercar.
