It was true: BMW is preparing the new tri-turbo diesel

There are rumours that BMW is already preparing two of its M6 Gran Coupe models and a few others with the first tri-turbo diesel engine in history, which would see the light of day in 2012. The models equipped with this engine will be the M6 Gran Coupe 50d and 50d M-Sport, both fitted with the optional xDrive.

Let us recall that the German brand has had this type of engine under development for about three years, and it is said to be producing roughly 350 horsepower, a dream figure for a diesel road car.

After presenting the two Gran Coupe variants, the same engine will also power the 750d, the X6 xDrive50d, the saloon, the Touring and the 5 Series Gran Turismo, and the X5.

Some details of the tri-turbo include how its three turbos work, which operate in sequence, delivering power in a linear fashion and without dips in torque. The idea is for it to be paired with an automatic gearbox, which would take 6 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h.
