Jeep refuses to recall 2.7 million Grand Cherokee and Liberty models

This will not be the first time a mass recall has happened for a brand. But I believe it is the first time I have read that a manufacturer refuses to comply with the recall ordered by the US NHTSA covering 2.7 million vehicles.

You may wonder why such a large recall, covering so many vehicles, is needed. The reason is that the problem the NHTSA has taken action on appears to be long-standing. In fact, the models involved in the recall are so numerous because they span Grand Cherokee production from 1993 to 2004 and Liberty models from 2002 to 2007.

The problem appears to relate to the engine’s fuel lines and hoses, which could lead to potential fires. The recall was ordered a month ago, but Jeep insists it has no need to recall so many vehicles. The problem was identified in some of its models, but Jeep says that fuel line problems represent such a small percentage of its statistics, affecting only a very low share of production, and that in any case these problems had already been resolved at the time.

A recall this large would put serious strain on the reliability of Chrysler and some of its sub-brands such as Jeep, in the eyes of investors and in light of the full takeover of Chrysler that Fiat and Sergio Marchionne are planning for 2014.
