Lexus wants to keep competing in today’s market and to that end has decided to integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its current range of models.

Over time we have witnessed how numerous innovations have ended up becoming an essential element in the contemporary vehicle. The evolution of the smartphone has also been key to implementing certain advances that make our day-to-day easier, such as connectivity through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Lexus has embraced the saying “adapt or die”, and that is why its range of models will now include this technology, capable of drastically reducing distractions at the wheel by allowing us to use our mobile phone in a more logical and safer way.

The Japanese brand has always championed various technologies that were revolutionary at the time, such as hybridisation. Other less significant aspects have gone more unnoticed, but Lexus has wanted to close out 2019 with a major renewal of its infotainment system.

The UX, NX, RC and ES models will incorporate this update as standard in their 2020 range, which will be available from December onwards. For those who own any of these models, there is no need to worry, as Lexus offers the installation of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto completely free of charge, so that owners can enjoy the system even if their vehicle is not the latest version.

Thanks to this smartphone integration system, it will be possible to manage through the infotainment system applications such as WhatsApp, Google Maps or Spotify. It will be as simple as connecting our smartphone via a USB cable, waiting for the connection to be established and then using either the multifunction steering wheel or the trackpad located on the centre console.

At a minimum, the MM17 multimedia system will be required, which is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although it is slightly outdated compared with the current one. With this in mind, the Lexus range is being updated to narrow the gap with its main rival, and thus offer more cutting-edge technology that blends perfectly with our everyday tasks.

For the moment, the Japanese manufacturer has made no statements regarding future additions or renewals to its range, but given this update, it would not be surprising to see a new member that offers a refreshed design language. Meanwhile, Lexus has made sure to improve its current offering so it can keep going head-to-head with the European giants, who continue to put up a fierce fight against Asia.
