Mahindra Thar 2024 Earth Edition: the new version of the Indian off-roader that is going to surprise

The off-road market has several models to choose from. There are not as many as we might think, although internationally there are a few more than we can find on the Spanish market. In India they have an alternative to the best-known models that has a very attractive price and very efficient features.

The Mahindra Thar is an off-roader that was presented a few years ago and that has become a very functional off-road vehicle with very interesting sales in the Asian country. So much so that the brand has launched a more extreme version of the model, to make it even more attractive to lovers of difficult terrain and off-road adventures.

The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition now enjoys exclusive elements for the version and has a more luxurious, comfort-focused approach, even when driving over complicated and demanding terrain. On the outside, it is painted in Desert Fury and fitted with 18-inch wheels, with special inserts to identify the special edition.

Logos indicating membership of the Earth Edition special edition have also been added to the B-pillars. This is also seen through the insertion of decals on the sides and matt-colour lettering. The model’s grille also features Desert Fury colour, with a black background.

Inside, the materials used in the model have been improved. The upholstery uses beige synthetic leather with a print inspired by the desert and its dunes on the headrest. The exterior colour is reflected in elements such as the frame of the air vents. An identification plate has been added on the dashboard, on the side facing away from the steering wheel.

The engine powering this Mahindra Thar Earth Edition special edition comes in two different versions available to buyers. The first is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 152 CV, and the other is a diesel engine, also turbocharged, of 2.2 litres producing 132 CV.

It has four-wheel drive and is available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. It is worth noting that the traditional Thar versions only have rear-wheel drive.

As for price, this version will cost between 1.54 and 1.76 million rupees. At current exchange rates, this puts the price between 17,000 and 20,000 euros. An equivalent model, and one that many consider the origin of the Indian model, is the Jeep Wrangler, which sells for 6.25 million rupees, roughly 70,000 euros.

For now, it is only available as a three-door body, although the brand is expected to launch a five-door version within a few months. The chances of getting one of these off-roaders in Spain are minimal, because it will not be sold there, but even with a significant price increase, if it were imported into Spain, it would be well worth it.
