Mercedes AMG C 63: the most agile version of the C-Class to date

Mercedes AMG C 63 will become the most powerful version of the C-Class ever produced by the German manufacturer, thanks to its V8.

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 family has always been characterised by its dynamism, its thrilling driving experience and its elegant design. This family of models has always been a sales success, and now the German manufacturer wants to keep up this momentum with its new and exciting C 63 version.

The saloon, the Estate, the coupé and the convertible are now on sale with a much more pronounced exterior design, a modernised interior and more agility than ever. The 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT gearbox with quick shift transitions, the electronically controlled rear differential and its AMG TRACTION CONTROL system with nine levels raise the model’s longitudinal and lateral dynamism to a completely new level.

Another addition that will enhance the fun and driving sensations is the AMG DYNAMICS. It is a stability control system that extends the functions of ESP with a perfectly metered distribution of power between the rear wheels, thereby increasing agility while maintaining great stability. We also have the new AMG steering wheel.

The powerful eight-cylinder engine is its most outstanding feature. No other model in its competitive class can boast a power source like this. Let us not forget the rear-wheel drive that characterises the model, or its V8 engine to complement it.

In the words of the Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The C-Class AMG is our best-selling model. It is therefore a decisive foundation for the company’s success in recent years. For this reason, we have continuously expanded the range of high-performance vehicles in the C-Class. Today, our customers can choose from twelve models in the C-Class family. With the new reorganisation, we have again considerably upgraded all versions of this series“.

The AMG TRACTION CONTROL system

This traction system in the C 63 S allows the rear axle slip to be regulated across nine levels, which is particularly interesting for those who enjoy sporty driving, especially on track or on surfaces with uneven grip. Another feature that ensures greater fun behind the wheel is the integrated AMG DYNAMICS stability control system.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G gearbox with shorter transitions

For the first time, the C 63 is fitted with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G gearbox, designed to deliver a more dynamic driving experience. A wet clutch for starting replaces the torque converter, which saves weight and improves responsiveness to the driver’s inputs, especially when accelerating quickly and during load changes.

Thanks to its multiple direct gear ratios, faster downshifts become a reality. We also feature the dual-clutch function for an even more exciting driving experience in the “Sport” and “Sport +” driving programmes.

The “Manual” mode can be selected using the button on the centre console. Gear changes are carried out with the paddles on the steering wheel.

Six driving modes for every situation

With 6 driving modes, the C 63 can meet the driving needs of any moment, from more efficient modes that save fuel to the most extreme dynamic driving mode it offers, Race. These are all the modes available in detail:

  • Slippery road: the new Slippery road driving programme is designed for driving on low-grip surfaces, with reduced power and a flatter torque curve.
  • Comfort: comfortable driving, optimised to reduce consumption, among other measures through very early upshifts to a longer gear. Comfortable tuning of the chassis and steering.
  • Sport: a more sporty character through a more agile response to accelerator input, faster gear changes, earlier downshifts and dual-clutch function, which makes gear changes more noticeable and emotional. More dynamic tuning of the chassis and steering.
  • Sport+: an extremely sporty character with an even more agile accelerator response, acoustic enhancement of the dual-clutch function through throttle blipping and precise intervention in engine torque when engaging a higher gear, with partial deactivation of certain cylinders for faster gear engagement. Increased idle speed for quicker pull-away. More dynamic tuning of the chassis, steering and drivetrain.

  • Individual: individual adjustment of the powertrain, chassis, AMG DYNAMICS and exhaust system.
  • RACE: the C 63 S additionally offers the RACE driving programme for driving with high dynamism on closed circuits open to the public. In this mode, all parameters are optimised to deliver maximum performance.

Safety and stability with AMG DYNAMICS

In both the C63 and the C63 S, the MAG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes are complemented by AMG DYNAMICS. This system extends the functions of ESP (electronic stability programme) while maintaining great stability. To achieve this, the system distributes and meters the power between the rear wheels, thereby increasing agility. The system optimises lateral dynamism and aids cornering by increasing traction.

AMG DYNAMICS offers several options within the various driving programmes described above:

  • Basic: is assigned to the Slippery road and Comfort driving programmes. In this mode, the C 63 is characterised by very stable handling, with strong damping of yaw rate.
  • Advanced: is activated in the Sport programme. The C 63 retains its balanced and neutral behaviour. Less damping of yaw movements, fewer steering angle corrections and greater agility favour dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding roads.
  • Pro: is part of the Sport+ programme. In “Pro” mode the driver receives greater assistance in dynamic driving manoeuvres, increasing agility and precision when cornering.
  • Master: is available exclusively on the C 63 S, and is linked to the RACE driving programme. Master mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience the dynamism of driving and the pleasure behind the wheel on closed circuits open to the public. Master sets a tuning with a slight oversteer tendency, few steering corrections and a more agile steering response. In this way, Master mode guarantees maximum agility and allows you to fully enjoy the dynamic potential of the new C 63 S.

Regardless of the driving programmes, the driver can use the buttons on the centre console to select manual gear shifting, their preferred chassis setting or, for example, the sound of the exhaust system.

What lies under the bonnet?

The new C63 is the only vehicle in its segment with a V8 engine. It is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo AMG engine that produces 476 hp or 510 hp depending on the version. Its maximum torque is 700 Nm. The C 63 S achieves an impressive acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, while the C 63 does it in 4. Its top speed is limited to 290 km/h on the C 63 S Saloon and Coupé, 280 km/h on the C63 S Estate and Cabriolet, and 250 km/h on the remaining C 63 variants. There is an option to request an increase in top speed.
