Mercedes-AMG celebrates its 55th anniversary by “changing the game”. We tell you everything the star brand has in store.

BMW M is grabbing all the headlines with the celebration of its 50th anniversary, but the star brand is not being left behind, because Mercedes-AMG celebrates its 55th anniversary. The high-performance division based in Affalterbach has unveiled a series of special editions to mark the occasion, including the launch of the Mercedes-AMG A35 and the Mercedes-AMG CLA35 Edition 55.

The party has only just begun for the star brand. It has also created a campaign called “55 years – changing the game”, which will commemorate the innovation and engineering for which the high-performance division has become known. Ambassadors such as Lewis Hamilton and will.i.am will take part in a social media project that will tell the stories of both AMG vehicles and the people behind them.

There is much more to look forward to. A unique exhibition will pay tribute to the legendary AMG vehicles at the Mercedes-Benz museum, while the exclusive AMG private lounge in Affalterbach will host a unique display. In addition, a special episode of Inside AMG on the brand’s YouTube channel will celebrate the anniversary through “different perspectives”.

Those who know Mercedes-Benz and AMG know the illustrious history and the brand’s contribution to the world of high-performance cars. Legends such as the 300 E 5.6 “Hammer” and the 300 SEL 6.8 “Red Pig” cemented AMG’s reputation as a maker of fierce super saloons, while vehicles such as the current GT 63 SE Performance and the often-forgotten SLS AMG Electric Drive represent innovation.

To round off the campaign, AMG’s legends will be shown alongside their contemporary successors, probably in the museum exhibition and on social media. Think of the R129 SL73 AMG and the current SL range developed by AMG. Mercedes-AMG continues to push the limits with creations such as the One, a rarity powered by a 1,000 CV F1-derived V6 engine.

Mercedes-Benz does not mince words when it comes to preparing for the future. The EQ range has given way to several luxury electric vehicles that may have an unusual style but, at the very least, boast incredible technology and high levels of luxury. AMG will soon head down the same avenue and, although we will miss the baritone growl of an Affalterbach V8, there is still plenty to get excited about.
