Mercedes-AMG is already running performance tests on its new premium SUV

This new electric SUV from Mercedes-AMG promises to be a revolutionary vehicle in both design and performance. It will also be the first model in this segment developed entirely by AMG in its entire history.

Mercedes-AMG has begun the testing phase of a new electric SUV based on its own AMG.EA platform, both on closed circuits and on public roads, as the company itself has announced. The first destination for these tests is the cold winter of northern Sweden, where the German firm’s engineers will evaluate the vehicle’s capabilities in extreme conditions.

This model, whose name is still unknown, is the second model from Mercedes-AMG based on the new AMG.EA platform –AMG Electric Architecture–. Last spring, the German high-performance vehicle manufacturer also began testing in Sweden a four-door Gran Turismo based on this same platform.

As can be seen in the image at the beginning of this article, published by the manufacturer itself, the prototype being used in these tests is heavily camouflaged, and very few details about this model are known to date. The only thing we know is that, being a Mercedes-AMG model, its performance will be exceptional, powered by several motors with the most advanced technology, fed by a battery pack capable of delivering an instantaneous energy flow higher than usual in this type of vehicle.

Nobody should doubt it. It will not disappoint

When Mercedes-AMG announced at the beginning of last November the future launch of a high-performance SUV from the brand based on the AMG.EA platform, company management did not hesitate to remind that this model will above all be an AMG SUV, giving maximum priority to its performance, regardless of its propulsion system.

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the G-Class and Mercedes-Maybach divisions of Mercedes-Benz, referred to this idea with a simple but very direct motto: “AMG first, electric second”. Thus making clear that what matters in this new model is not that it is electric, but that it behaves exactly as everyone expects a vehicle that has passed through the hands of AMG to behave.

It remains to be seen, however, whether this initial approach by the manufacturer, paying maximum attention to performance and driving dynamics from the early development stage, will or will not end up penalizing other important factors in any electric vehicle, such as energy efficiency or range, and to what extent this will happen.
