Under the name GLA Concept, Mercedes-Benz will present a new compact crossover at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show that is still in the prototype stage. The event, which kicks off on April 20, will unveil this model for the first time, of which we only know its design. The production version will appear at dealerships next year after being revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept, measuring 4.38 metres in length, 1.97 metres in width and 1.57 metres in height, is a few centimetres larger than the A-Class, the model with which it shares its platform and much of its design. The wheelbase remains identical at 2.69 metres.

Compared with the German compact, the GLA features a more rugged appearance thanks to larger wheel arches, roof rails, and oversized wheel arches and bumpers. The 20-inch wheels are fitted with 255/45 R20 tyres. Should this type of wheel make it to the production model, the GLA will have little or no ability to tackle tracks or off-road terrain.

In the cabin, the GLA Concept borrows the dashboard and interior panels from the A-Class design, although as an initiative, bespoke elements and materials have also been added to this new model with unique shapes. In the production version, much of the exterior and interior lines will disappear to make way for softer and more contemporary shapes.
