Mercedes is not content to stay behind and is bringing forward the arrival of new electric models to 2022
The new sub-brand of Mercedes dedicated to fully electric cars will receive a major investment to have 10 models ready from 2022 onwards

Mercedes is rethinking the launch of its 100% electric models and will try to bring forward the date for new models of this type. Until a few days ago, the date being considered was 2025, a date that seems very distant and could allow other brands to get ahead in the complicated electric car market.
Today, they have just announced that they will bring the date forward to 2022, and to do so they plan to make a major investment. No less than 10,000 million euros will be put into developing the cars they want to present on that date, a total of ten models that will aim to become, like all the cars of the brand with the star, benchmarks in a market that should be a priority from that date onwards.

The petrol and diesel engines will leave the centre of Mercedes’s production, following the natural path towards electric models, although for the moment that is still a utopia. This traditional type of drivetrain will continue to be offered, although gradually there will be a shift towards solutions based on electricity. This will mean that hybrids will gradually take on a more prominent role, until they move to purely electric propulsion.
One of those hybrid models is the redesigned S-Class, which will be presented at the Shanghai Motor Show. This model will have a hybrid version that uses new lithium-ion battery technology and will be able to run fully electrically for 50 kilometres, a distance that improves on the range of this type of vehicle from the brand.
But this does not mean that they will neglect combustion engines, which will seek better performance and lower consumption. For the executives at Mercedes, innovating in one area is not incompatible with the other. Both are important to the company, and work is being done so that its cars remain the most efficient in their respective segments.
We have already seen that Mercedes will include all of its electric models under a new brand, EQ, which will begin to be ready to present models from 2019 onwards. For now, we have been able to see the concept car Generation EQ, a 100% electric SUV, which would be one of the first models from the German sub-brand, but which would soon be joined by other similar vehicles, saloons and estates, all powered by electricity.
