Mercedes takes on the 1.8 DiesOtto engine

It has been a long time since Mercedes surprised half the world with its latest petrol engine creation, a project like the 1.8-litre DiesOtto petrol engine, which we were led to believe was finished and ready for implementation, but more than three years have passed and we still know nothing about it, until today.

As a reminder, the 1.8 DiesOtto is a four-cylinder 1.8-litre engine which, combined with features such as direct fuel injection, auto-ignition control, a starter-generator motor, twin variable-geometry turbochargers, and a variable compression ratio (from 7:1 to 14:1)… results in a peak output of 238 CV and 400 Nm of maximum torque.

But that is not all, since according to the German manufacturer this 240 CV engine has an average fuel consumption of 6 litres/100 km, so we are basically looking at a conventional combustion engine which, when driven gently, consumes as little as possible, but if you need an extra burst of power you only have to press the accelerator all the way down.

Well, as far as we understand, this interesting petrol engine could appear on the market alongside the next generation of the Mercedes Class S and, supposedly, spread to the rest of the models thanks to its compact size.

Without doubt, in my view, the whole battle over hybrid and electric models comes down to improving current engines, DiesOtto and similar, while all these systems gradually improve and, above all, end buyers get used to the idea of buying these kinds of models or at least taking the time to inform themselves better about them.
