The chief designer of the British brand MINI has confirmed that after the launch of its first electric car in 2019, MINI could design new models.

MINI has announced its intention to expand its model range over the next decade to offer new electrified designs. The first of these vehicles to reach the market will be the MINI EV, the British company’s first electric car, which will be launched in 2019.

The brand has remained faithful to its five designs over time, but the arrival of MINI’s first electric model in 2019 could mark a change in MINI’s mindset. With the aim of developing hybrid and electric models, MINI’s chief designer, Oliver Heilmer, has stated that the company could expand its range.

The company’s decision to consider expanding its catalogue stems from the rise in sales of electrified vehicles and the high demand for MINI designs, especially among younger buyers.

“The first MINI was created out of necessity. That is why we would like to analyse what the needs will be over the next five or six years. We want to see the customers who are 13, 14, 15 years old now. What is their aesthetic approach? It is obviously influenced by smartphones, so if we can capture that well, we can create the cars of the future,” Heilmer told the English publication Autocar.

The chief designer has also confirmed that all of MINI’s future designs will feature its iconic “floating roof”, the distinctive shape of the upper part of the British company’s cars which, lacking side pillars, gives the impression of floating in the air.

While we wait for news about the brand’s new models, MINI continues to work on its first 100% electric car, which was recently presented as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Heilmer has confirmed that the design is not yet finalised, and the team is still deciding between possible colour and wheel design ideas.
