MINI is preparing a second electric model based on the Rocketman prototype

MINI’s new 100% electric model will arrive in 2022 and will be manufactured in China for the whole world, based on the MINI Rocketman prototype from 2011

Not long ago MINI announced its first 100% electric model, but it has wanted to keep moving forward in electric mobility and is already preparing its second purely electric model. In this case, it will take a little longer than the MINI Cooper SE, as it will arrive in 2022.

Furthermore, the new model will be based on the MINI Rocketman prototype, although it does not have an official name yet. To carry out the production of this model, BMW has wanted to establish an industrial alliance with the Chinese company Great Wall Motors, which will contribute its experience and developments in this market to the alliance.

The MINI Rocketman model will be based on the platform owned by the Chinese company. Apparently, it fits what is expected from this model, since the prototype was designed with a combustion engine and, in any case, a hybrid powertrain in mind.

Now, the design of the model has been adapted to fit this platform in order to achieve electric mobility, and this car from the British brand will be the first to emerge from the union of these two companies, BMW and Great Wall Motors, which was signed a few months ago.

This MINI will be manufactured at the Jiangsu Chinese plant and, with the participation of the Asian company, the cost price of the car can be reduced, so that it becomes the entry level of the brand’s electric range.

The MINI Rocketman will be manufactured in China, under the agreement to make electric models for the market of that country, but in this case it will be distributed globally, so it will be present in all markets around the world.

There is little data on what this 100% electric model will offer, but considering that Great Wall Motors has several cars aimed at urban mobility in its catalogue, we will surely see the company’s technology in this model.

MINI wants to bet on the electrification of its range with 25 models of this type, electric and hybrid, by 2023.
