In a strategic move within the Japanese automotive industry, Mitsubishi Motors has decided to join the collaboration established between Honda and Nissan. This alliance, originally announced by Honda and Nissan in March 2024, focuses mainly on the development of electric vehicles and artificial intelligence software, and promises to transform the dynamics of the sector.

The information comes from Nikkei Asia, although the specific conditions regarding the integration of Mitsubishi into this partnership are not known. Nevertheless, the announcement has already had positive financial repercussions, with a 6.3% increase in the shares of Mitsubishi, a rise that reflects market optimism about the potential synergies and economies of scale this union may offer.

What will the benefits be?

The incorporation of Mitsubishi into the Honda-Nissan alliance could be a crucial step in reducing research and development costs in the field of electric vehicles. Standardizing the artificial intelligence software across the three companies would not only reduce expenses, but could also accelerate innovation and improve the competitiveness of their products.

In addition, this collaboration opens the door to greater diversification of the product range. The companies could benefit from agreements with original equipment manufacturers, especially in areas such as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) propulsion systems and kei cars or “key cars”, small vehicles that are very popular in Japan.

Background to the alliance

The collaboration between Honda and Nissan was already a significant step forward when it was announced, and the participation of Mitsubishi is seen as a natural evolution. This is not surprising, given that Nissan holds a 34% stake in Mitsubishi, a move intended to facilitate integration and collaboration between these companies.

However, representatives of Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan have chosen not to comment on the agreement at this stage, which adds a veil of mystery over the specific details and next steps of this alliance.

Rivalries and alliances

The Japanese automotive industry is seeing a clear division into two competing camps. Earlier this month, it emerged that Toyota, together with Suzuki, Subaru and Mazda, is forming its own collaboration focused on electric vehicles, following a recent alliance to develop combustion engines.

This split in alliances creates a competitive scenario in which the two coalitions will face each other in the global market. With the combined annual sales of Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan totaling 8.35 million units, these three companies account for almost half of the combined global production of Toyota and its partners, which amounts to around 16 million units.

The urgency of these alliances is also due to the need to compete effectively with giants of the electric vehicle sector such as Tesla, as well as with a growing number of Chinese brands that are quickly gaining ground. The collaboration between Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan is an attempt to keep pace with these competitors, combining resources and expertise to create innovative and competitive products in the global market.

As these companies collaborate on the development of advanced technology for electric vehicles and artificial intelligence software, they are positioning themselves to lead an industry that is evolving rapidly.
