NASCAR selects ABB as its main electric mobility partner

The United States motorsport association, NASCAR, has just announced its new electric mobility alliance with the technology group and charging infrastructure manufacturer ABB. The first tangible result of this collaboration is a new electric racing prototype capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW.

According to the US subsidiary of the Swiss technology group, the cooperation between NASCAR and ABB seeks to create strategic opportunities for electrification in sport, including racing vehicles, electrification infrastructure and energy education. Both partners presented this prototype during the NASCAR Chicago Street Race 2024. Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota also took part in its development.

ABB states that this new prototype is equipped with three electric motors, capable of delivering a maximum power of 1,000 kW. One of these motors is integrated into the front axle and the other two into the rear. Likewise, a liquid-cooled 78 kWh battery pack powers the propulsion system. It is also worth noting that the tyres are Goodyear Racing Eagle specially designed for the occasion, and that the vehicle’s regenerative braking system converts kinetic energy into electricity, which is especially useful on short oval tracks.

NASCAR is committed to sustainability

On the other hand, ABB will also become a founding partner of NASCAR Impact, a platform to promote sustainability initiatives in motorsport. The goal is for NASCAR to reduce its carbon footprint to zero by 2035.
