Nearly 600 Repsol stations already offer renewable fuel

Repsol is firmly committed to renewable fuels, setting its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050

Surtidor Con Gasolina Renovable

In a new strategy to lead and accelerate the decarbonisation of transport, Repsol has set itself the goal of expanding its network of service stations offering renewable fuels across the Iberian Peninsula to more than 600 stations. For the multi-energy company, which is at the forefront of the green revolution, renewable fuels are of great value in achieving its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050.

Today, Repsol already operates more than 60 stations supplying renewable diesel across the Iberian Peninsula, thereby exceeding the expectations set in May last year. The main advantage of these fuels is their composition and versatility, as they can be used in all types of vehicles without needing to modify engines, for example.

But that’s not all: Repsol uses used cooking oil as one of the key organic wastes for the production of its renewable fuels. In this context, in recent months, the company has implemented a collection initiative for used cooking oil at its service stations located in the Community of Madrid and Galicia.

Repsol’s latest move includes a pilot project at three service stations in Madrid, where 100% renewable petrol is offered with the aim of expanding the range of sustainable options for consumers. The Repsol stations in the city of Madrid, specifically in Hipódromo, Arturo Soria and Herrera Oria, are the first in Spain to offer 100% renewable petrol and diesel.

Producing 100% renewable petrol also presents difficulties; it is not as simple as it seems, as the industrial processes are still under development. The team of researchers at the Repsol Technology Lab, with more than 20 years of experience designing petrol for MotoGP, has applied its high-level competition expertise to the formulation of this new fuel. The product is obtained from biomass residues, the agri-food industry and used cooking oils, thereby reinforcing Repsol’s commitment to sustainability.

Repsol’s renewable fuel offering adds to a broad range of mobility options, including electric mobility, AutoGas, CNG/LNG and Neotech fuels. The company has nearly 4,000 service stations strategically distributed across the Iberian Peninsula.

Repsol has led the manufacture and marketing of biofuels for more than two decades, incorporating organic waste into its production since 2019. These renewable fuels are already part of all service stations in Spain, complying with current regulations that require a content of more than 10% in the fuels sold.

In the coming weeks, Repsol will open in Cartagena (Region of Murcia) the first plant on the Iberian Peninsula dedicated exclusively to the production of advanced biofuels from waste. This facility, with an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes, will help avoid the emission of 900,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. In addition, in 2025, in Puertollano, Repsol will launch the second facility dedicated exclusively to producing biofuels from waste, with an annual production of 240,000 tonnes.
