New 1.6 Turbo petrol engine with 200 CV for the Opel Insignia

Opel adds an interesting petrol version to its Opel Insignia range, with the new 1.6 Turbo engine producing 200 CV, equipped with a particulate filter.

It’s not that the Opel Insignia lacks engine choices. Among the diesel variants there are versions of the 1.6 CDTI with 110 CV and 136 CV, joined at the top by the 2.0 CDTI with 170 CV and the 2.0 CDTI Biturbo reaching 209 CV. On the petrol side the range starts with the 1.5 Turbo with 140 CV, which also comes in a 165 CV version, with the most performance-oriented being the Insignia 2.0 Turbo 4×4 with 260 CV.

Now, Opel adds a new petrol version that fills the wide gap between the 1.5 with 170 CV and the 2.0 with 260 CV, and it even becomes – price will also play a big part here – an alternative to the most powerful diesel versions. This is the new 1.6 Turbo 4-cylinder, which is announced with a maximum power of 200 CV at 5,500 rpm, and a maximum torque of 280 Nm between 1,650 and 4,500 rpm.

This new engine is offered across the whole Opel Insignia range, for the Insignia Grand Sport as well as the estate Sports Tourer and the “crossover-dressed” version, the Insignia Country Tourer. For the saloon, with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox, a top speed of 235 km/h is announced, with 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 7.7 seconds, and an official average combined consumption from 6.3 l/100 km, converted from the WLTP cycle to NEDC. Optionally, a six-speed automatic gearbox can be chosen.

As with the vast majority of new models launched with petrol engines, especially those with a certain level of power and performance, Opel also uses a petrol particulate filter (GPF) as standard in this new engine, which allows the Insignia 1.6 Turbo to meet the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard, coming into force in September 2019.

For the time being, prices for the Spanish market have not been announced, but analysing the pricing ladder Opel uses in its current range, we could estimate a starting price of around 32,000 euros for the Insignia 1.6 Turbo 200 CV, very close to the 2.0 CDTI 170 CV.
