New Golf world premiere: more modern, more intelligent

Volkswagen has today made the world premiere of its most anticipated model. The new Golf 8 has been officially unveiled. With a new design and renewed connectivity, it promises to become a success.

Volkswagen has unveiled the eighth generation of its most emblematic model. We are talking about the Volkswagen Golf, and this year it comes loaded with novelties. Highlighting its new design, very evident in its bodywork, and all its new connectivity settings, the new model is here to stay.

Renewed and modern design

Just by looking at this new eighth generation Golf we can see the many changes present in its bodywork.

Starting with the front, its new IQ LED matrix headlights stand out as standard, which are much slimmer and more discreet than in previous generations. The grille is no exception, standing out for its elegance, with a triple-line design that blends black with the body colour.

The roofline, with its downward sweep, gives the model presence and a more sporty character. The drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.275.

The side maintains the classic lines of the Golf. It will obviously be available both as a coupé and as a 4-door version. The wheels are particularly eye-catching, with a star-like design that suits it perfectly.

Finally, at the rear of this compact, we find a discreet and elegant design, very much in keeping with this new eighth generation. Its brake lights are slimmer and longer, and the exhaust pipes perfectly complement this new bodywork.

The exact dimensions of this eighth generation Golf are as follows: 4,284 mm long, 1,789 mm wide and 1,456 mm high.

A wide range of versions to choose from

The new Golf will be the first Volkswagen to reach the market with five hybrid versions (Mild Hybrid and plug-in hybrid).

It also features 8 new powertrain versions with a fuel consumption reduction of up to 17%.

TSI, TDI, TGI, eTSI and eHybrid are the options available to customers. All petrol and diesel engines are direct-injection with turbocharging.

The power range of this new generation runs from 90 CV up to 300 CV. For the first time, eight different versions will be offered on the Golf.

New additions include 2 three-cylinder engines with 90 and 110 CV, as well as two four-cylinder diesel engines of 115 and 150 CV. The new TSI features particularly low consumption and emission values.

On the other hand, we have the 3 eTSI engines and two eHybrids. Volkswagen makes its debut with 48V technology. The efficient TSI engines form a new Mild Hybrid propulsion system as eTSI.

The advantages are remarkable, as among other things, fuel consumption savings of up to 10% are achieved.

Volkswagen offers in this case 3 power levels: 110 CV, 130 CV and 150 CV, as well as two plug-in hybrid powertrains, are some of the options we will have to choose from.

An efficiency-oriented version of this eHybrid reaches 204 CV. The sportiest version, the GTE, develops a total of 245 CV.

Both eHybrid Golfs feature a new 13 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides a wide range and temporarily turns the Golf into a zero-emission vehicle.

A connected and “intelligent” interior

The interior of the new generation Golf also brings changes. Many of them revolve around the driver.

The new digital instrument cluster stands out, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, with a 10.25-inch screen. All of it, of course, in high definition and with a design to match.

The cabin is spacious and comfortable, very much in keeping with the history of this famous model. It conveys a modern, technological and youthful character but does not seek to change the essence of the most famous model from the German manufacturer.

The infotainment system is operated via an 8.25-inch touchscreen. It also features a multimedia system that provides access to all kinds of digital content, both offline and online.

Of course, it includes the most advanced technologies in the sector. Travel Assist, i.e., assisted driving functions, is available for the first time ever in a compact-class model. This makes it possible to drive with assistance at speeds of up to 210 km/h.

The new Golf is also the first to interconnect with its surroundings as standard. Its Car2X function uses real-time information from other vehicles within a radius of up to 800 metres. This system also identifies traffic signs and transmits warnings, among other functions.

Adaptive cruise control, turn assist, parking assist and all kinds of technologies will also be available. Of course, it offers seamless connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

New “connected” equipment lines

The equipment range starts with the Golf. It comes as standard with LED headlights, Keyless Start, digital instruments, and an infotainment system with an 8.25-inch screen.

Features such as We Connect, We Connect Plus, a multifunction steering wheel, Climatronic, lane departure warning, turn assist, Front Assist, predictive pedestrian protection system, and Car2X also come as standard.

From here, the new wide range of equipment lines of this eighth generation Golf opens up:

• Life: Connected and with plenty of colour. Features 16″ wheels, exterior ambient lighting with logo projection onto the ground, inductive charging interface for smartphones, Wireless App Connect, Park Pilot, among others.
• Style: Comes with all the extras of the Life version, and also features 17″ wheels, additional chrome exterior elements, front sports seats, leather steering wheel and gear knob, exterior mirrors with memory, ambient lighting with 32 colours to choose from, LED headlights with dynamic indicators, as well as Travel Assist and Lane Assist, among others.

• R-Line: The famous R line of Volkswagen is more dynamic and sportier. In addition to the equipment included with the Life version as standard, it features 17″ “Sebring” alloy wheels, R-Line specific bumper, rear diffuser, high-end sports seats with the classic R upholstery, sports chassis, progressive suspension, driving profile selection, black interior roof lining, perforated leather multifunction steering wheel or aluminium gear knob, among others.
• GTE: Sportiness and performance with hybrid propulsion. It produces 245 CV (180 kW). Its exterior is distinguished by ambient lighting, exclusive bumpers specific to this version, 17″ alloy wheels, red brake calipers, a dedicated rear diffuser, GTE roof spoiler and taller roof skirts. These are some of the features of this exciting and fun hybrid version.

For now, we do not know the prices of this new eighth generation Volkswagen Golf. What is clear is that it will be a resounding success and, as always, Volkswagen has once again shown why it is one of the most popular and best-selling car manufacturers on the planet.
