New Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, a different estate

Mercedes-Benz officially unveils its first sporty estate, the CLS Shooting Brake, with images and information.

Mercedes-Benz expands the CLS range with the arrival of the new and distinctive CLS Shooting Brake, an estate with a sporty flair. With this model, the German carmaker takes another step toward changing the star’s direction. The new Mercedes are no longer cars for retirees; they are vehicles for all ages with a modern design.

This model measures 4.95 metres in length, 1.88 metres in width and 1.41 metres in height, making it one centimetre longer than its saloon-coupé sibling. The size improvement is really noticeable in the boot. It now offers 70 litres more capacity, giving it a total volume of 590 litres.

To keep the car at the same height at all times, the engineers have fitted air suspension on the rear axle. That way, when the boot is loaded, the suspension raises and the vehicle stays stable at all times.

The estate variant has few changes compared with the original. At launch, there will be two petrol versions (350 BlueEFFICIENCY and 500 BlueEFFICIENCY) and two diesel versions (250 CDI and 350 CDI), all paired with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox and an automatic engine start-stop system. Only the most powerful versions will get all-wheel drive.

The interior shows a high standard of finish. It feels even more upmarket than a regular CLS; the luxury seems to increase. It seats five, although the centre seat is only suitable for short journeys. The tailgate opens and closes automatically as standard, and the boot is trimmed in leather and wood.

When I first saw it a few months ago in spy photos, I thought it was some kind of bad German joke, but little by little I realised it wasn’t. The car took shape right up to its unveiling. It even looks sporty; in fact, in my opinion it is the most beautiful estate Mercedes-Benz has ever built. It is a kind of Audi RS6 Avant, an estate you can travel with the family and the dog in, yet one that still lets you enjoy driving.

A unique model for a unique brand.
