New Mercedes-Benz GLS: the new star of the SUV segment

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS has been unveiled by the brand, so we can now see the first images and data of the third generation of the manufacturer’s flagship.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS has been renewed to remain the flagship of the brand’s SUV range. As a fundamental element in earning this title, the new model needed large dimensions, so it has grown 77 mm in length and 22 mm in width compared with the previous generation.

The wheelbase has increased by 60 mm, which translates into greater interior space, evident in its second row of seats. The new Mercedes-Benz GLS features three rows of seats, so a total of seven passengers can experience what it is like to travel in first class.

If the additional row of seats is not needed, these fold away beneath the boot floor to create a boot with a completely flat loading surface of 2,400 litres. In addition, the German SUV is offered in two configurations: one with seven seats and another with six, in which a walkway is created to access the rear more comfortably.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS is all muscle

The Mercedes-Benz GLS aims to project an image of power and strength, something that is certainly achieved at first glance at the SUV. However, it is not a rugged design; instead, it presents a stylised image and harmonious proportions. This is because the guiding principle in its design has been the concept of sensory clarity, so edges and elements that would disrupt the harmony have been avoided.

At the front, we can see a huge grille and good chrome protection for the lower bodywork. The new front lights also stand out, incorporating Multibeam LED technology, which integrates a total of 112 LED diodes in each headlamp.

At the rear, the power of its wheel arches stands out, with a ridge that starts at the rear door and runs along the silhouette to the rear lights. In addition, a chrome strip visually links the two rear lights. To complete the rear, the lower bodywork receives a chrome trim.

Another principle that every flagship must fulfil is elegance and luxury, which the new Mercedes-Benz GLS exudes as soon as you step into its cabin. The new crossover from the German manufacturer combines the luxury of a large saloon with the robustness of an SUV.

Luxury and comfort in abundance

The main feature is the centre console, with a bulky shape that contrasts with the lightness of the instrument cluster, which seems to float in the cabin. Another element of note is the large screen of the MBUX infotainment system, which allows control of all the car’s main functions.

As a novelty, the advanced MBUX system can be installed in the rear rows, taking the form of two 11.6-inch screens. Here, occupants can watch films, listen to music or browse the internet.

If you choose the comfort package for the rear seats, a 7-inch tablet running the Android operating system is included, mounted on the central armrest of the rear rows. In this way, rear occupants can access the radio, television, phone or internet browser.

In addition, it allows control of the comfort package functions for the rear seats and the five-zone climate control system. The equipment can also be completed with lumbar massage and seat heating and ventilation for the seats in the central row.

On the other hand, the third row of seats features the “Easy Entry” function to get in and out without much effort. This assistant moves the second-row seats forward and folds them with the press of a button. Moreover, the seats are not token in size, as they are in many vehicles, and can accommodate people up to 1.94 metres tall.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS features 48V Mild Hybrid technology

The first version to be revealed is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 4MATIC, which has a V8 engine under its bonnet combined with 48-volt Mild Hybrid technology. This engine produces 489 hp and 700 Nm of torque, which can be increased by a further 250 Nm and 22 hp by activating the EQ Boost function. The 48-volt network powers electrical components such as the water pump, alternator and air conditioning compressor, thereby reducing consumption. If you want to know exactly how Mild Hybrid cars work, we explain it.

There will also be diesel versions: the Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d 4MATIC with 286 hp and the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400d 4MATIC with 330 hp. Both engines meet Euro 6d emissions standards thanks to elements such as the additional SCR catalytic converter and the ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). These engines also have an AdBlue tank with a capacity of 31.6 litres. It is therefore confirmed that Mercedes-Benz diesels are ready to keep on delivering.

The entire range of engines is paired with the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. Another novelty is the transfer case, configured to achieve balanced behaviour both on and off the road, and also featuring a low-range gear for off-road use.

New technologies to achieve exceptional behaviour

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS fits the latest version of the Airmatic air suspension with height-adjustable damping. This sophisticated system has a number of sensors that adapt the firmness according to the scenario and driving mode. It also keeps the body at the same height at all times, regardless of whether the car is more or less loaded.

A complement to the suspension is E-Active Body Control, which regulates the damping and suspension forces at each wheel, thereby neutralising body roll. This system works with the 48-volt mild hybrid system and can even act as an electrical energy regenerator for the system itself.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz has developed E-Active Body Control to make off-road manoeuvres easier. Among the functions designed for this use is the wheel articulation system, which can raise each wheel to a greater or lesser extent to free it from an obstacle.

In addition, this advanced system helps this heavyweight take bends in a much more dynamic way. When the “Curve” mode is activated, the Mercedes-Benz GLS can lean into the curve, similar to the way a motorcycle does. Also, thanks to the “Road Surface Scan” function, a camera analyses the surface ahead of the car so the chassis can adapt to any irregularities it may encounter.

A wide range of driver assistance systems

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS incorporates all of the brand’s latest innovations in driver assistance and safety. One of the most important elements is the Distronic active assistant, which adjusts speed according to the route, so the car can detect tailbacks or slow traffic and react before the driver notices the problem.

Another system is the active traffic jam assistant, which can keep the vehicle within its lane and maintain the safety distance from the vehicle ahead at speeds of up to 60 km/h. It is therefore able to stop and resume driving autonomously.

Another driver assistance feature is the trailer manoeuvring assistant. This system makes reversing easier when a trailer is attached to the rear.

We do not yet know the prices or the exact date of release for the new Mercedes-Benz GLS, so at Top10motor we will keep you informed.
