New Polestar 2 2024: up to 654 km of range on a single charge

The new Polestar MY 24 receives a new battery and switches from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive in the Single Motor versions, which increases its range up to 654 km.

Polestar announces its new Polestar 2 MY24 range, with an update that brings significant improvements, especially in terms of range and charging. The bad news is that this update does not benefit customers of the Swedish electric saloon, which was presented in 2019 and reached the Spanish market in 2022. The changes are not minor. As already happened with the electric Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge, the single-motor versions of the Polestar 2 switch from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, with a new, more efficient motor.

With this update, the Polestar 2 gains ground to compete with some of its alternatives, such as the BMW i4 and the Tesla Model 3, against which it was clearly at a disadvantage in both range and charging power, which has also been improved.

Over 650 km of range for the Single Motor versions

Along with a new high-capacity battery that increases from 78 to 82 kWh, the announced WLTP range for the Single Motor version is 22% higher, reaching 654 km. The new battery is not the only factor here; the greater motor efficiency, optimised by up to 9%, plays a major role too. This Single Motor version with the larger battery, for example, has an average consumption of between 14.9 and 15.8 kWh/100 km, and it also increases the maximum DC charging power by more than 30%, now reaching 205 kW.

The Single Motor version with the smaller battery, which keeps a capacity of 69 kWh, announces a range of up to 532 km; in this case the maximum charging power remains at 135 kW. As for the Dual Motor versions, always with the larger battery, the range now rises to 591 km, compared with 487 km for the previous model.

Updates of this kind confirm that, in the current state of this technology, it is not advisable to buy a new electric car outright, especially a high-end one. Instead, a leasing contract is the most suitable option to “protect” yourself from battery, motor or charging power updates that cannot be applied over the air, and that leave your brand-new electric car outdated in just a couple of years.
