NIO plans to sell electric cars with a range extender outside China

With this new strategy, NIO will follow in the footsteps of other Chinese manufacturers such as Li Auto, which is currently enjoying great success with this type of vehicle, although in this case in its own market.

The Chinese manufacturer NIO is planning an unexpected turn in its market strategy. In 2026, the company will launch its first vehicle equipped with a combustion engine under the Firefly brand, and it will do so internationally, bypassing its own market. This new model will be an electric car with a range extender (EREV), in which the combustion engine is used as a generator to recharge the battery pack.

NIO aims to begin sales in the Middle East, North Africa and also in Europe, according to some sources close to the company.

The official presentation of this new model under the Firefly brand is scheduled for December 21, coinciding with NIO’s annual event, with first customer deliveries planned for 2027. This new strategy represents a significant change of direction for the company, which until now has remained faithful to fully electric vehicles.

A change of course

In recent years, NIO has focused on promoting its own battery swapping system as a differentiating element against the competition, a way to solve the range problem on long-distance journeys, rather than opting for combustion engines as range extenders. A decision most likely explained by the notable increase in sales of this type of vehicle in the Chinese market, where there are even brands such as Li Auto that sell only EREVs.

On the other hand, it should also not be forgotten that electric vehicles integrating a combustion engine as a range extender are exempt from the new special import tariffs imposed by the European Union, since these only apply to pure electric vehicles. Integrating a combustion engine into electric models has therefore become a trick that Chinese manufacturers can use, at least for now, to continue selling their vehicles in the European market at competitive prices.

This move by NIO into international markets will not only diversify its offering, but also demonstrates the Chinese manufacturer’s ability to adapt to established trade regulations and also to market preferences, which will allow it to continue expanding globally.
