NIO will allow its European customers to swap batteries of different capacities

NIO has applied this new, more flexible model in Europe, drawing on the experience gained in the Chinese market, where battery swapping at one of its stations spread across the country is becoming increasingly common.

The Chinese manufacturer NIO has just announced important news affecting customers in Europe who opted for an electric vehicle from the brand with a swappable battery. In some European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, these customers will now have the option to dynamically choose between two battery capacities according to their needs at any given moment.

Until now, when purchasing a NIO vehicle with a swappable battery, buyers had to decide between a standard-range battery with a 75 kWh capacity or an extended-range one with 100 kWh, and this decision was unalterable at the time of swapping the battery at one of the brand’s stations, known as Power Swap Stations.

Now, based on the experience the company has accumulated in the Chinese market, where this service has been a resounding success, NIO will also allow its European users to choose monthly which type of battery best suits their needs when making a swap. According to the company, this much more flexible model is particularly useful for adapting to its customers’ different lifestyles. If in a given month they only plan short or medium-distance trips, the standard-range battery is a better option as it is more economical. However, in summer, for example, when holidays arrive and people tend to travel more, the higher-capacity battery will reduce the number of recharges since, depending on the model, it offers approximately 30 percent more range.

In China it is even better

It is important to point out, however, that in China this model is even more flexible. In this market, NIO allows owners of one of its electric vehicles with a swappable battery not only to choose between the 75 and 100 kWh batteries, but also offers a 150 kWh battery as an option, which does not have to be kept for a full month but can be rented for a week or even a single day. This model implemented in China has led to a substantial increase in demand for standard-range batteries, which are the ones usually used day to day, while a higher-range battery is chosen only in specific periods such as holidays.

Battery reservation is made through the NIO mobile app, with the option to schedule a swap up to one day in advance. Users can thus go to a swap station the following day to replace their current battery with the one they have requested, with a different capacity.

“With flexible battery swapping, European NIO users benefit from freedom of choice, convenience and the peace of mind that they will have adequate range at a lower cost. We are giving our customers the opportunity to choose the battery that best suits their needs. For us, this is the future of electromobility.”

Finally, it should be noted that, according to the company, implementing this model in Europe has forced it to face some challenges due to tax regulations, especially regarding the taxation of company vehicles. NIO has taken these issues into careful consideration, although some details remain to be clarified about how the flexibility of battery swapping will be managed in contexts such as corporate vehicles.
