Nissan, Mitsubishi and Renault will share the same electric car platform
The Franco-Japanese alliance will produce its future electric vehicles on the same platform on which the Nissan Leaf is currently manufactured.
Today, electric vehicles still cost more than their conventional equivalents. Low production volumes of electric vehicles push up manufacturing costs. For this reason, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Renault will share the same platform to produce their electric cars, according to the newspaper Nikkei.
This measure allows manufacturers to place joint orders with their suppliers, significantly reducing manufacturing costs. Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi will share the same batteries, motors and other components in their electric vehicles. The Franco-Japanese alliance intends to cut the production cost of its future electric vehicles by 20%, by using the platform on which the Nissan Leaf is currently built.
According to Automotive News, Nissan plans to launch a new Leaf in 2018 whose price could drop to €16,270; the base model currently costs €29,235.
According to Reuters, other automotive giants such as Volkswagen AG or Toyota Motor Corporation also intend to mass-produce electric cars. Tightening emissions regulations appear to be accelerating the development of electric cars on the market.
