No, well... yes: The VW BlueSport now gets the green light for production

Of all the car industry soap operas that are driving us crazy, the one about the, for now fictional, two-seat roadster with a mid-mounted Volkswagen engine is among the most “tiresome”. The rivalries within the German group, now that it has taken in Porsche, froze the chances of making the BlueSport a reality this June (although by then that had already been heard many times, just under other pretexts), but the British publication Autocar now dives into the pool and says that’s not the case and that the small, much-wanted convertible sees the light at the end of the tunnel. That said, the date doesn’t change: until 2013 there will be no sign of it.
In fact, the British publication claims that precisely those fraternal conflicts with Audi and Porsche will be what makes the investment in the MMB (Modulare Mittel Baukasten) platform pay off, which will share components with the Golf to reduce costs. Likewise, since this platform may have its width changed, it could be adapted to the character that each sister brand wants to give its version of the roadster.
The BlueSport would have a 1.6 FSI turbocharged engine which, thanks to Audi’s valvelift system, could produce around 220 CV. It would be paired with a manual six-speed gearbox or the essential DSG with the same number of ratios. The other engine units that Audi and Porsche will share also come from the EA888 range of Volkswagen, currently found in the Golf and the Scirocco.
Autocar adds that production would be split between the Hanover plant, responsible for the body panels, and the Osnabruck plant, where Karmann was located and which would also produce the Audi and Porsche versions. Finally, it notes that it will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013 where Volkswagen will unveil the definitive BlueSport, which will be in dealerships in early 2014. The Wolfsburg firm had better start shedding some light on this…
