November brings bad figures for car sales: they fall again

The year 2020 has not been good for the automotive industry, as in so many other industrial and commercial activities, with falling sales.

2020 has been a forgettable year for many reasons, and the drop in sales of new and used cars is one of them. Although in July it seemed there was a rebound in sales with 1.1% growth against the decline of the other months, November confirms that the fall in registrations remains in force and seems to foreshadow that the year will end in negative territory.

This November closed with a total of 75,788 passenger cars, compared with the 93,227 passenger cars sold in November 2019. A drop that represents 18.7% compared with that month. It is the second worst figure of this second half of 2020, although it is also true that it is the month of this period in which the most cars have been sold.

General drop in registrations

Looking at the details, no segment has escaped a fall in sales. In the private customer channel, 39,021 units were registered, which is 25.1% fewer than the same month of the previous year. The corporate channel experienced a slightly smaller decline. The absolute figure was 32,565 units, representing 6% fewer than in 2020.

The car rental companies have also been restrained when renewing their fleets. In this channel the lack of tourism and business travel has been felt, so only 4,192 units were registered, and it recorded the largest drop of the whole month, reaching 35.4% fewer than those sold in November 2020.

As for total sales figures up to November 2020, 745,369 new vehicles sold must be recorded. The decline stands at 35.3% compared with the same period of 2019. December does not look like it will be better, nor that it will bring an improvement in the year’s final results.

Best-selling in November 2020

Sales favoured Peugeot during November. This brand managed to sell 6,068 vehicles and relegated Seat, the previous monthly sales leader, to second place. However, the Spanish brand managed to sell 6,044 units, while with 5,324 vehicles sold, Volkswagen takes third place in the list of new vehicles sold in Spain.

In total figures Seat still tops the sales list, with 62,115 units sold. Behind this brand come Volkswagen, Peugeot, Toyota, Kia, Renault, Hyundai, Mercedes, Dacia and, closing the top 10 brands, BMW.
