OLED technology arrives in the lights of the BMW models

If you are a technology enthusiast, you will surely be familiar with OLED technology. You already know that these are organic diodes that improve on LED technology and provide a more perfect, pleasant luminosity. They are used in high-end televisions, delivering a clearer and more vivid image, but this is not the only place where they can be found. BMW has begun applying this technology to cars, and the BMW M4 GTS will be the first to benefit from it.
To begin integrating it into the automotive industry, this model was chosen, although the technology will later be incorporated into the brand’s range in the BMW 7 Series. This first model will feature taillights equipped with OLED technology, which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, offering greater luminosity and making the car more visible to other vehicles.
OLED diodes are thinner than LED diodes, reaching a diameter smaller than that of a human hair. Unlike LED, light is not produced through a semiconductor material, but through extremely thin semiconductor layers made of organic materials. This results in a smaller size, and the complete assembly is much smaller than the previous technology.
The use of OLED
will not replace LED for the time being, but will complement them. The light emitted by these diodes makes the car more visible to other vehicles and better accentuates its shapes. Another of their advantages is that different zones can be switched on and off, so that a different lighting scenario can be prepared for each need.
Their size, weight and, above all, electrical consumption, make them highly efficient and ideal for future applications in electric and hybrid vehicles, as their range and operating time would be ensured. With this technology, still in its infancy and which will be used in a practical way for the first time in this model, the visibility of cars will be improved, but also other factors, something worth considering. For now, BMW will introduce it into its models on the market, and later on we will see whether it is really as practical and useful as they promise.
