OnStar from Opel will incorporate autonomous technology
General Motors is working with Mobileye on new mapping technologies that will enable autonomous driving of its vehicles thanks to the OnStar system.
General Motors is developing, together with Mobileye, a mapping technology that could benefit from the information collected by OnStar in real time and that would allow Opel vehicles to drive autonomously in the future. The OnStar system has been available on Opel models since August 2015.
Mobileye, a technology company and leader in the development of software and driver assistance systems, aims to process the visual information around us to keep drivers safe on the road, reduce accidents and enable autonomous driving. To do so, they have created, together with General Motors, Mobileye’s Road Experience Management, a continuously updated road map that interprets road data, the lane, or the exact location of the vehicle.

“Cameras are the best means for map creation because they are available on all new models, as part of a trend aimed at enhancing driver service and assistance. Creating and updating maps using the vehicle’s cameras as technological support fills the gap between on-board sensors and the need for full safety that enables autonomous driving,” says Amnon Shashua, president and CTO of Mobileye.
General Motors and Mobileye previously collaborated on the development of the forward collision warning software and the lane departure warning technology, launched in 2007. Mobileye expects to achieve geolocation so precise that it has a margin of error of just 10 centimeters, compared with the 10 meters currently offered by a standard GPS.

“General Motors wants to offer semi-autonomous and 100% autonomous vehicles to its customers, and this technology will be essential. We are planning to integrate REM into GM’s launch program,” says Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain.
OnStar from Opel is available on four continents and serves more than 7 million customers. In our country, this service is available across the whole range, and there are currently more than 45,000 vehicles on our roads with this technology.
