Opel announces three new models to close out the decade
Opel is preparing a major offensive with 27 new products to finish this decade strongly and start the next one with momentum, as it has the replacements for the Meriva and Zafira on the drawing board, along with a large new SUV to enter that segment

The design and development of a new car model is no small task, and car manufacturers know this very well. So before they start working on a physical car, they get down to business at the drawing board, carrying out many calculations and assessing the possibilities for bringing the project to fruition.
That is why it comes as no surprise that Opel now announces it will begin producing a large SUV, which will reach the market in 2020. The German brand’s aim is to firmly establish itself in the manufacturing of this type of car and to take on the manufacturers already offering a similar model.
Another thing that has to be done before production of a new model can begin is to have the plant that will build the car ready. For this reason, Opel has announced that it will invest 245 million euros in the Russelsheim plant from next year onward, in order to modernise the facilities and make them compatible with the design of the new model.
This multi-million investment will be joined by another, worth several billion euros, which will modernise the engine and transmission manufacturing plants at Russelsheim, Kaiserslautern and Tychy. This is because this SUV will not be the only model to close out the decade: replacements for the Meriva and Zafira MPVs and new engines are also planned.
These will total 17 new engines that will power the future Opel models arriving in the coming years. These engines and the three new models form part of an offensive to increase the brand’s presence in the European market with 27 new products. We suspect it won’t be long before we learn more about the brand’s plans for that future SUV that is set to shake things up.
