Opel has announced the introduction of a series of eco-focused measures that will make the 1.6 CDTI engine, fitted to a wide range of models, more economical and environmentally friendly.

Specifically, the improvements will first reach the Astra range, where the 1.6 CDTI is one of the star engines.

Opel introduced the 1.6 CDTI engine approximately a year ago. It is a new-generation powerplant, built from scratch. Therefore, it incorporates all the current technology found in diesel engines today. Its purpose was to replace the previous 1.7 CDTI of Isuzu origin, which was fitted to many of the brand’s models for quite a few years.

The new 1.6 CDTI is currently also fitted to most of the brand’s vehicles, among them the Mokka, Insignia and Astra. It is the latter that will receive the improvements first, which will translate into lower fuel consumption and reduced polluting emissions.

The engine now benefits from more efficient combustion thanks to various adjustments made to its electronic management, as well as the implementation of camshafts with a new design. In addition to the mechanical adjustments, the Astra 1.6 CDTI also receives low rolling resistance tyres. Everything contributes its part to reduce the consumption of one of the best-selling compacts on the market. The final results are there, although they cannot be considered dramatic; it is true that the 110 CV Astra 1.6 CDTI consumes less (from 3.7 litres to 3.6 litres per 100 km), emitting fewer harmful substances (94 g of CO2).

The 136 CV version also reduces its consumption, now using 3.7 litres per 100 km, down from the 3.9 litres it needed until now (always in combined cycle). Emissions now stand at 99 g of CO2, a drop of 5 g.
