Panoramic roof: is it worth it?

The panoramic roof is a very popular add-on. From an aesthetic point of view it has many defenders, but… what does it actually give us? We give you the keys to knowing whether it is worth it.

Before tackling the advantages and disadvantages of a panoramic roof, it is important to make clear what it really is, since there is a lot of confusion with the sunroof or tilting roof. A panoramic roof is one that covers more than half of the vehicle’s roof with a single pane of glass, whereas a sunroof is considered just one more window because the glass can be opened.

Advantages of the panoramic roof

The main and undeniable advantage of fitting a panoramic roof to the car is the light it brings into the cabin. The tinted glass of our roof lets in an extra amount of light, with which not only will we see the interior of our car better, we will also feel a greater sense of space.

Aesthetically, a panoramic roof gives the car a more streamlined look. It used to be considered an almost luxury extra, but nowadays more and more mid-range models come with a panoramic roof. An accessory that, in terms of image, adds a bonus that some people really appreciate. Although, as they say, tastes differ, and so do colours…

Contrary to what one might think, safety is another advantage of the panoramic roof. Because it comes fitted from the factory, the panoramic roof is perfectly integrated into the bodywork and behaves as one more safety element. In addition, it provides more rigidity than conventional sheet metal and in the event of a rollover, experts assure that there are stronger glass panels than a sheet-metal roof.

Disadvantages of the panoramic roof

Undoubtedly, not everything is going to be good. The panoramic roof also has drawbacks when it is fitted. The first of these is the temperature in the summer months or in strong sunshine. The glass will make our car heat up more than it should when temperatures rise, and no sunshade will save us from the heat.

We have already seen that a glass roof can be safer than a sheet-metal one. But, likewise, it will weigh more. This increase in weight brings two drawbacks. First of all, it raises the car’s centre of gravity, and although only minimally, this can affect its handling. These extra kilos also bring with them an increase in fuel consumption, which, although small, must also be taken into account.

It is not a drawback of the panoramic roof itself, but of retrofitting it. If it comes fitted from the factory, the roof will not affect the vehicle’s safety since it is integrated into its bodywork. But fitting it to a car with a sheet-metal roof is another matter, because then the bodywork has to be cut, and this can affect one of the transverse reinforcement bars. In this way, the safety of our car and the insulation of the installation would be compromised.

Panoramic roof price

Years ago, including a panoramic roof in our car’s specification could mean a considerable outlay. Today its installation is still expensive, but it does not reach the prices of the past. We are talking about an average between 800 and 1,000 EUR extra compared with a car without a panoramic roof. Although it is true that this price increase is not due to the glass roof alone. Some brands include the panoramic roof in a package or higher trim level that also includes extras in safety and design.

That said, you have to bear in mind the cost of insurance. Even if it comes as standard, your policy will treat it as an extra and will push up the premium. You also have to check whether the policy you have taken out covers damage to the roof glass under the glass cover, because not all insurers will pay out. So, just in case, take note of the tips for looking after your windscreen… which can also help you keep your panoramic roof in better condition.
